Stop touching your face
Did you know that the human hand carries around 150 different types of bacteria? Each of our hands can house up to ten million bacteria. That is the reason why touching our face trough out the day can cause acne or blackheads. Make sure you touch your face as little as possible, and always wash your hands before doing your skincare routine or your makeup.
Find out your skin type
Beauty and skincare products are designed for a specific skin type. There are five types of skin: normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive. You can find out your skin type online with this easy guide created by CeraVE. Once you know what type of skin you have, choose the right products for you and your skin will thank you.
Keep it simple
When it comes to the perfect skincare routine, simplicity is key. Follow this simple routine twice a day :
- Cleansing
- Eye cream, Moisturizing/Sunscreen
- Spot treating (if necessary)
Then add a suitable mask for your skin type and a method of exfoliation to use twice a week, and that’s it. In the morning make sure to apply a moisturizing product that has SPF, and in the evening a simple night cream. Wash your hands before doing your skincare routine and use gentle circular motions.
Eat well
Having a well-balanced diet is probably the number one thing you should focus on. Try to consume only the recommended amount of sugar per day and include foods that contain healthy fats and antioxidants. Some of the best sources of omega fatty acids and antioxidants are: fish, avocados, nuts, olive oil, carrots and sweet potatoes.
Hydrate
Drinking enough water will not only make your skin look better but will also help you improve your overall health. You can find out how much water to drink depending on your weight here.
Exercise
Exercising will improve your blood flow, making it easier for our bodies to flush toxins. Together, eating well, hydration and exercising will have a great impact on your health in general and that will, for sure, show up on your skin. Taking care of yourself from within should always be your number one priority because no matter how well done is your skincare routine, your skin will continue to show signs when something is not going well within your body.
Sleep well
Getting a good night sleep will regulate stress levels and help the skin regain its vitality. Sleeping well comes hand in hand with the last three steps and we shouldn’t underestimate its power. Choose your pillowcases carefully, make sure they are made of either cotton or silk and change them regularly. If you struggle with acne, clogged pores, or blackheads try changing your pillows every night until your skin clears up.
Use sunscreen
Using sunscreen lowers the risk of developing skin cancer and prevents sunburn, sunspots, and early aging. You won’t see the difference right away but with time you won’t regret making the effort.
See a dermatologist
A specialist will always help us see things more clearly. If you struggle with a skin condition or if you simply need help figuring out what products you should use, start seeing a dermatologist. Look online for reviews or ask for recommendations and keep in touch with your doctor. You might need to come in for checkups only a few times, but it will make the biggest difference.
Take care of body as well
We often focus on the skin on our faces, and we neglect the rest of our bodies. Although our skin should do just fine without our intervention, we can do a few things to help it become stronger and healthier. Choose a gentle cleanser and, every day, after your shower, apply a small amount of moisturizer all over your body, you can apply a lotion with a richer formula on your elbows, knees and ankles because these are the areas that are usually dry. Exfoliate twice a week with a method that best suits you. If you struggle with keratosis pilaris or strawberry skin check out our post on How to get rid of strawberry skin for good. Make sure to use sunscreen whenever you expose your skin to the sun. Another grate way to take care of your skin is making sure you wear high quality, breathable materials such as cotton, linen or silk. And last but not least be grateful for your skin and learn to love all of your imperfections, because they are what’s making you, you.
